Joomla! 2006 Open Source Content Management System Award Winner

2006 Open Source Content Management System Award (http://www.packtpub.com/award). With 16,000 votes for more than 70 different Open Source Content Management Systems nominated for the award, Joomla! was judged winner of the final. After eight weeks of voting from visitors to www.PacktPub.com and judges from The Open Source Collective, MySQL, the Eclipse Foundation, and CMSPros, Joomla! triumphed with the most votes, winning $5,000. Joomla! is the youngest CMS of the five finalists having originated by the then Mambo development team in August 2005. Joomla! was chosen due to its ease of installation and use along with the active development and community that supports the project. Core team member Alex Kempkens said the award was a wonderful surprise. I would personally like to thank Packt for their contribution to the Joomlasphere — by publishing Joomla! guides and by running such a successful competition, he said.

LinuxUser and Developer magazine (http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/) publisher Maggie Meer.Johan described the win for Joomla! as one for the community . The buzz around the Joomla! project is driven by our huge user base and this translates into what is fast becoming the most popular open source framework going, Johan said.Chris Adams, of Rochen (http://www.rochenhost.com/), who is a major sponsor of the Joomla! project was nominated as Best Linux Open Source ISP / Internet Host. Unfortunately, Rochen missed out this year but it was great to have Rochen with us to celebrate. Chris and the Rochen guys are part of the Joomla! family ... this is as much Rochen's award as it is the developers and the communities.

One Giant Step for the Joomlasphere Joomla! 1.5 Beta Released

Joomla! 1.5 beta (http://forge.joomla.org/sf/frs/do/viewRelease/projects.joomla/frs.joomla_1_1_x.1_5_0_beta) delivers more simplicity for the user and much more power for developers. The innovation and skill of our development team is clearly setting higher and higher standards. But before we get into reams of detail about just how good Joomla! 1.5 beta is, remember this is a beta and is not yet ready for use on a production website. We need the community to roll up its sleeves and seek out bugs (and feed this back to the development working group), before we enter the release candidate phase. Joomla! 1.5 beta marks the most significant watershed in Joomla's history. This effort represents a complete refactoring of the Joomla! codebase and leverages a new API that allows developers to deliver more robust and innovative applications than ever before. Joomla! 1.5 means freedom of choice: you choose how it operates, you choose how it integrates, you choose what the output is ... you choose how users are authenticated. For both the user and the developer, Joomla! 1.5 beta is a simplified yet more powerful system, and from the developer's perspective, provides them with the freedom and flexibilty to build anything they want. Lead developer Johan Janssens said 12 October is a giant step for the Joomlasphere! Open source projects are delivering incredible power and features to end users — we've taken things a step further by building an opportunity for unlimited extendibility for developers, he said. Once developers get to see how easily 1.5 can leverage their own ideas as plugins, they will certainly be a big part of continuing Joomla's incredible growth. You only need to take a look at the Joomlasphere to understand how amazing the future can be.

Meet Wilco Jansen - The new development workgroup coordinator

Wilco Jansen has joined the Joomla! Core Team. He has accepted a coordination role of the newly-formed Development Working Group. The group is made up of core team developers and community members. Wilco, 39, of The Netherlands, worked as the Joomla! Summer of Code program manager where he mentored a range of projects. Wilco works as an IT manager for a health care insurance company and lives in Wijhe — and brings a wealth of experience including management, strategy and structure skills. Wilco said the new workgroup will initially aim at pushing out the Joomla! 1.5 Beta release and then move on to deliver a more cohesive workgroup strategy to further secure Joomla's future. If you're reading between the lines, this approach frees up key code contributors to concentrate more on code. We took the time to ask Wilco a few questions: Where do you think Joomla! will be in 12 months? From the development point of view we will be close to the beta of 2.0, and we will have surely developed a 1.6 and 1.7 version. From the end-user point-of view I expect Joomla! to be even more successful than it is now. Third party developers will discover the true power of the framework, and will develop functionality that Joomla! users will use. I also expect Joomla! to be used by large companies .

Upgrade immediately to Joomla! 1.0.11

(http://forge.joomla.org/sf/frs/do/viewRelease/projects.joomla/frs.joomla_1_0.1_0_11) Joomla! 1.0.11 [ Sunbow ] is now available as of Monday 28th August 2006 24:00 UTC for download here (http://forge.joomla.org/sf/frs/do/viewRelease/projects.joomla/frs.joomla_1_0.1_0_11). and is being designated a critical security Release. All existing Joomla! users must upgrade to this version, due to several High Level vulnerabilities that affect all previous versions of Joomla! We have always been fully committed to a security first principle and new intiatives have and will continue to be started to reinforce and continue this principle. Joomla! 1.0.11 highlights a redoubled effort to put security at the forefront of everyones lexicon. Like any and all software, security is a continually evolving and constant battle between application developers and hackers. The increased security threats discovered in the Joomla!Universe indicate nothing more than an increasing usuage of Joomla! throughout the world and thus an increasing interest from hackers. It does however serve to remind everyone, both application developers and application users that security is an eternal vigil and one cannot rest.
